Norges fyr

Alnes fyr, oppført i 1937 på Godøya, ligger nær havet i det historiske fiskeværet Alnes og rommer i dag et opplevelsessenter med kunstutstillinger og kafé med lokalprodusert mat (Alnes Lighthouse, established in 1937 on Godøya, stands close to the ocean in the historic fishing village of Alnes and today houses an experience center with art exhibitions and a café serving locally produced food).

Norge har verdens nest lengste kystlinje etter Canada (Norway has the world’s second longest coastline after Canada). Gjennom historien (Throughout history) har det blitt bygd over 200 fyrstasjoner i Norge (over 200 lighthouses have been built in Norway) for å hjelpe sjøfolk å navigere i det røffe farvannet (to help sailors navigate the rough waters).

Et fyr er et sjømerke med lys (A lighthouse is a navigational aid with light) for å veilede skip og båter trygt på havet (to guide ships and boats safely at sea). De gjør at skipene finner fram (They enable ships to find their way) langs kysten (along the coast) og inn til havn når det er mørkt (and into ports when it is dark).

De eldste norske fyrene (The oldest Norwegian lighthouses) var ved- eller kullfyrte (were wood or coal-fired) og var enten plassert i lave tårn (and were either located in low towers) eller på et vippefyr (or on a bascule/seesaw light). En modell av et vippefyr kan sees på Verdens ende på Tjøme (A replica can be seen at World’s End on Tjøme). Lindesnes fyr (Lindesnes lighthouse) var det første fyret som ble opprettet i Norge (was the first lighthouse to be built in Norway), i 1655. Fyret ligger på (The lighthouse is located at) Norges sydligste fastlandspunkt (Norway’s southernmost point on the mainland).

I Norge (In Norway) er det Kystverket som har ansvaret (the Coastal Administration is responsible) for fyrene (for lighthouses). Informasjon om et fyr (Information about a lighthouse) finnes i sjøkart (can be found in nautical charts). Kystfyr har høye tårn (Coastal lighthouses have tall towers) og kraftig lyskilde (and powerful light sources). Lyset rekker langt til havs (The light reaches far out to sea) og gir sjøfarende et trygt landemerke (and provides seafarers with a safe landmark). Innseilingsfyr (Approach beacons) leder skipsfarten trygt inn fra havet (guide shipping safely in from the sea) og til indre leder langs kysten (and to inner channels along the coast).

Etter år 2000 (Since 2000) har stort sett alle fyrene blitt automatisert og ubemannet (almost all lighthouses have been automated and unstaffed). Lindesnes fyr er det eneste i Norge (Lindesnes lighthouse is the only one in Norway) som er bemannet med fyrvokter (that is staffed by a lighthouse keeper).

I dag kan fyrene betraktes som (Today lighthouses can be considered) en del av Norges kulturarv (part of Norway’s cultural heritage). En nasjonal verneplan for fyrstasjoner (A national conservation plan for lighthouse stations) ble utarbeidet (was developed) for å trygge rundt halvparten av fyrene i Norge (to preserve around half of the lighthouses in Norway). Flere fyrstasjoner (Several lighthouse stations) er åpnet for allmennheten (have been opened to the public) og har restauranter eller museer (and have restaurants or museums). Du kan til og med overnatte i noen av dem (You can even spend the night at some of them)!
