“It is encouraging that the Government in Khartoum and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) signed a declaration of intent in Qatar on Tuesday,” said Støre.

“This must be taken as an indication of a will to find a political solution to the conflict in Darfur. We urge the parties to continue negotiations and to reach agreement as soon as possible on a mutual ceasefire. It is also important that other actors not be excluded from these negotiations,” stated Støre.

Norway is actively supporting the negotiations, which are being conducted under the auspices of Qatar.

“In Norway’s view, it is essential that the parties commit themselves to a ceasefire, and that all those in need of it receive humanitarian assistance,” said the Foreign Minister.
