Universitetets aula (The University Aula)

From 1947 to 1989, Oslo’s Univeristy Aula was home to the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony.

Hvert år (Every year) holder Den internasjonale sommerskole ved Universitetet i Oslo (the International Summer School at the University of Oslo holds) åpningsseremonien (its opening ceremony) i universitetets aula (in the university’s assembly hall). Som ISS student i 2017 og 2019 (As an ISS student in 2017 and 2019) har jeg besøkt Aulaen flere ganger (I’ve visited the Aula several times) og jeg synes (and I think) dens historiske betydning (its historical significance) er veldig interessant (is very interesting).
Aulaen ligger i (The Aula is located in) Domus Media i Oslo sentrum (in central Oslo). Domus Media er midtbygningen (is the middle building) av universitetets tre opprinnelige bygninger (of the university’s three original buildings) ved Karl Johans gate (on Karl Johan Street). Aulaen ble oppført (The Aula was built) som tilbygg til (as an extension to) Domus Media til Universitetets 100-årsjubileum i (for the university’s 100th anniversary in) 1911.
I 1914 fikk Edvard Munch i oppdrag (In 1914 Edvard Munch was commissioned) å dekorere veggene av Aulaen (to decorate the walls of the Aula) og han malte 11 oljemalerier (and he painted 11 oil paintings). De største er (The largest are) Solen (“The Sun”), Alma Mater og Historien (and “History”).
Bortsett fra Skrik (Except for “The Scream”) hadde jeg aldri sett (I had never seen) noen andre malerier av (any other paintings by) Munch. Jeg var fascinert av (I was fascinated by) lyset og fargene (the light and the colors) i disse maleriene (in these paintings). Som ISS student (As an ISS student) hadde jeg også muligheten (I also had the opportunity) til å besøke (to visit) Munchs villa i Åsgårdstrand, hvor han fikk mye av sin inspirasjon (where he got much of his inspiration).
Etter den nazistiske invasjonen (After the Nazi invasion) i 1940 ble maleriene evakuert (the paintings were evacuated). Til slutt ble de transportert til (Evenutally they were transported to) Kongsberg, hvor de ble til krigen var over (where they remained until the war was over).
Fra 1947 til 1989 (From 1947 to 1989) ble Nobels fredsprisen delt ut i Aulaen (the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in the Aula). I 1990 flyttet prisutdelingen (In 1990, the award ceremony moved) til Oslo rådhus (to Oslo City Hall). Nå for tiden blir Aulaen ofte brukt (Today the Aula is often used) til akademiske og kulturelle arrangementer og konserter (for academic and cultural events and concerts).
