Ukraine has asked Europeans with combat experience to join the fight against the Russian invasion of the country. This has caused several hundred Norwegians to express a desire to fight, reports Forsvarets forum.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Oslo stated that up to 100 Norwegians have expressed interest in becoming a volunteer soldier in Ukraine, while the Armed Forces also received many inquiries.

The Armed Forces Personnel and Conscription Center (FPVS) stated that they have received between 200 and 300 inquiries since the war started last week.

“We receive inquiries daily, but the volume is not large compared to what we otherwise receive. The content of the inquiries can be vague so it is difficult to maintain accurate statistics on what concerns the crisis in Ukraine. Most people who reach out have no prior background from the Armed Forces,” said Steinar Almerud, head of the contact center at FPVS.

The Armed Forces stated that they respond that Norway and NATO are not parties to the conflict and do not recruit personnel.
