The Hamsun Days will take place in Hamarøy, Nordland August 4 -10, 2009

The new Hamsun Centre will open on August 4 to coincide with the 150-year anniversary of Hamsun’s birth. Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit will open the Hamsun Centre. The architect of the centre, Mr. Steven Holl will also attend. Holl, who is one of the world’s most recognised architects, has designed the building. The building is an invitation to experience Steven Holl’s architecture, design and ideas.

Author and Nobel Price Laureate Knut Hamsun grew up on beautiful Hamarøy in Nordland. Since the first event in 1982, the Hamsun Days have contributed to spreading knowledge of Knut Hamsun’s life and works, and his close connection to Hamarøy.

The literary seminar that is organized by the Hamsun Society is the most significant scholarly seminar about Knut Hamsun’s life and works.

Hamsun is best known internationally for having heralded modernism in literature and of course for his 1890 novel “Sult” (Hunger). Well known international authors such as Franz Kafta, Thomas Mann, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Bukowski, Paul Auster and Orhan Pamuk have all cited Knut Hamsun’s early works from the 1890 period as important sources of inspiration.
