Rybak won the national vote after the Melody Grand Prix (MGP) contest in Oslo Feb. 21, with an overwhelming 750,000 votes against Tone Damli Aaberge in second place, with 122.000 votes.

Alexander, who has been playing the violin since he was five, has composed and written “Fairytale”, which he presented with vocal and violin, backed by three acrobatic dancers at Oslo Spectrum. He was born in the former Soviet Union (now Belarus), but his family moved to Norway when he was four years old.

MGP is an annual music competition organised by Norwegian public broadcaster Norsk Rikskringkasting (NRK). It determines the Norway’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, and has been staged almost every year since 1960. The festival has produced two Eurovision winners and nine top-five placings for Norway at the contest.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2009 will take place in Moscow in May.
