Svindal takes Super-G globe
ARE, Sweden (AFP) — Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal consolidated his overall World Cup lead after a second place finish in the men’s Super-G on Thursday that also saw him net the discipline’s crystal globe.
The Norwegian, reigning world super combined champion and Super-G bronze medallist, finished the Super-G 0.07sec behind Italy’s Werner Heel’s time of 1min 13.41sec, with another Italian, Christof Innerhofer, in third at 0.20sec.
Svindal, who also won Wednesday’s season-ending downhill here, extended his overall points tally to 1009 points, 102 ahead of Austrian Benjamin Raich.
But third-placed Didier Cuche of Switzerland, the reigning world Super-G champion, has fallen out of the reckoning after only managing to finish 15th on Thursday, 1.20sec off the pace.
