Svendsen off to winning biathlon start

Norway′s Emil Hegle Svendsen clinched victory in the men′s biathlon World Cup season opener in Ostersund, Sweden Dec. 2.
Three-time world champion Svendsen posted 52 minutes 43.7 seconds including one penalty minute for the 20-kilometer race to enjoy a 35.5-second lead over Tim Burke of the United States.
Austria’s Christoph Sumann was third, a further 14 seconds back.
Svendsen gets 60 points for the win in the first of 25 World Cup events, with Burke earning 54 and Sumann 48.
The biathlon meeting in Ostersund continues over the weekend with men’s and women’s sprints on Saturday and team relays on Sunday.
