Soccer: Norway’s World Cup chances nearly gone
Norway’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup were damaged on Sept. 5, when they drew 1-1 away to Group Nine bottom team Iceland, reports Reuters.
After several early chances for both sides, John Arne Riise scored and gave Norway the lead in the 11th minute on a free-kick too powerful for the Icelandic goal keeper.
However, Iceland came back and Eidur Gudjohnsen made it 1-1 with a header.
The draw put the Norwegians in third place on seven points from as many matches. Norway will play a remaining qualifying match against Macedonia, but the trip to South Africa is already off, writes Norway Post.
