The city streets of Kristiansand are still not cleared after several days of heavy snow. Here early morning on Jan. 3.

Southern Norway has received more snow than the people there can handle. Several areas have received over 20 inches of snow in a few days, including Kristiansand and Arendal, but Risør stands out with total snowfall measuring over 40 inches.

In Risør, the snow depth went from 7 inches on Dec. 31 to 47 inches on Jan. 3.

In other words, 40 inches of snow fell in the first three days of the year.

In the far south of the country at Lindesnes Lighthouse, total snow cover went from 0 to 14 inches, the Meteorological Institute reported on X/Twitter.

Many schools are staying closed all week and there are problems with the delivery of necessary health services. The list of the consequences of the snow chaos is long, and it will take time before things go as normal.

“The extreme snowy weather has almost brought an entire part of the country to a standstill. The Home Guard contributes with tracked vehicles,” writes Forsvarets Forum.
