Minister of Transport and Communications Liv Signe Navarsete says that due to the oil resources, Norway’s efforts put into building new roads and maintaining old ones have been very poor over the past 30 years, reports Norway Post.
Speaking to Aftenposten, Navarsete says that the oil has taken priority, and national roadbuilding has fallen behind.
The main problem is that Norway has used far less on communications than other countries, she says.
“Because of the oil and related offshore industry, we have to a lesser degree than other countries seen the need for upgrading our highway infrastructure,” Navarsete says. Instead, she says, Norway has over the last 30 years given priority to nursery schools, social welfare and pension systems.
