Potatoes out from the "5 a day"
Until now food authorities in Norway have chosen to include potatoes in the list of fruits and vegetables we can choose our “five a day ‘from.
After three years of work is Nutrition Council is now ready with its proposed new diet advice , and now it appears that the potato-skeptics have a small victory.
“The reason that the potato is out of the recommendations is that we do not have enough evidence to actively recommend it as part of fruits and vegetables, ” says Nutrition Council leader Haakon Meyer to NRK.no.
Do not replace the potato with anything
But if we do not eat potatoes, what should fill the void left on the plate?
“We recommend that you eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, excluding potatoes. Do you eat enough vegetables, there may be a good choice to replace potatoes with broccoli, for example, ” says Meyer.
“But here it is important to think about what you possibly replace the potato with. White rice and regular pasta, for example, no healthier alternative, ” he continues.
Meyer points out that the potato may be part of a varied diet, according to the new councils, and that the small tubers definitely contains good fiber and nutrients such as vitamin C.
According to Meyer, the potato’s role has been thoroughly discussed in the working group.
