Petter Northug wins World Cup sprints
Three-time world champion Petter Northug from Norway and Slovenian Petra Majdic on Saturday won the World Cup sprint events in Lahti, Finland.
Northug beat compatriot Ola Vigen Hattestad and Russian Nikolay Morilov into second and third place respectively, winning in a time of two minutes 36.8 seconds.
Northug managed to close the gap in the overall World Cup standings on Switzerland’s Dario Cologna, who did not participate in Lahti, to 103 points.
Cologna has 939 points, while Northug is on 836. Axel Teichmann is third on 663 points, but after missing out on the quarter-finals in Saturday’s sprint the German said that he no longer has a chance of winning the World Cup.
