Oslo by Helicopter—Not only for Millionaires!
Talk to any commercial airline pilot – the Oslo approach is among the world’s most beautiful, often described as the blue, the green and the city in between.
Nested at the end of the 100 km Oslo Fjord, in a natural crib between the mountainous north and the eastern and western green hills, this small yet great city is a spectacular view from any point – and according to CEO and helicopter pilot John-Erik Sogn of HeliWing the very best is from above.
“Helicopter sightseeing is perhaps the greatest way to treat yourself to a sightseeing – and not as expensive as many believe!” says pilot and Manager John-Erik Sogn of the Oslo-based charter company HeliWing, when asked if this is a pastime reserved for champagne-swilling eccentrics.
Originally a flight engineer and after years in the computer industry, Sogn finally decided to become a helicopter pilot. Today he checks out in six different aircrafts and has more than ten years of flying experience in Norway and Switzerland.
“I wouldn’t change careers with anyone – except for on foggy and rainy days. The Oslo approach is incredible, and among the tourists’ favourite routes is approaching the city centre along the eastern coast of the fjord, passing over hundreds of islets and bays with names like Middagsbukta (supper bay), Kalvøya (calf island) and Dyna Fyr (blanket lighthouse),” says an enthusiastic pilot.
“And how about seeing the armada of a thousand sailing yachts for the “Færdern race” first weekend of June! And not to forget Oscarsborg fortress or the amazing white marble Opera House, the medieval Akershus Castle and Fortress or the bustling main street of Karl Johan!”
HeliWing will pick you up at the Tourist Information centre near the City Hall (although by car to the heli-pad…) and bring you safely back after a breathtaking experience according to your wishes. Check out the HeliWing homepage for rates and contacts – and don’t miss the virtual online flight movie along the Oslo Fjord Coastline.
