Order of St. Olav to Sami artist Mari Boine
The Norwegian Sami musician Mari Boine has been appointed Knight of 1. class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, reports the BarentsObserver.
His Majesty the King has in his evaluation emphasized Boine’s many-sidedness as an artist, the Royal Family’s web pages read.
She will receive the medal in Tromsø later this month, after having held concerts in Murmansk and St. Petersburg as part of a big international tour.
Mari Boine is Norway’s leading representative for “world music” and is known for having added jazz and rock to the yoiks of her native people.
Earlier this year Boine was awarded with Norway’s greatest mark of distinction for cultural work, the Anders Jahre Culture Prize, BarentsObserver reported. She has earlier been awarded with the Nordic Council Music Prize and several other prestigious prizes for her work and is appointed professor in music science at the Nesna University College.
