"Now I am a machine"

The Bergen Brann’s Carl-Erik Torp on Monday was operated to place the AED he had to have after his collapse during the game against Sogndal last weekend.
“When the operation was over, I was sore and tired in body, but very happy to have it done. Now I am a machine,” Torp wrote on twitter after the surgery.
The doctors found a serious error in Torp’s heart when he was examined in the days after he collapsed and was declared clinically dead for three minutes before the crews got his heart started again. It was decided that he must have a defibrillator permanently.

On Monday, Carl-Erik Torp of the Bergen Brann had a successful heart operation.

The operation was to place the AED he had to have after his collapse during the game against Sogndal last weekend.

he doctors found a serious error in Torp’s heart when he was examined in the days after he collapsed and was declared clinically dead for three minutes before the crews got his heart started again. It was decided that he must have a defibrillator permanently.

“A little sore and tired, of course, but I feel fine and am glad to have it done,” said Torp to Brann.no after surgery.

“Torp has notifiedthe Bergen Brann soccer team that the surgery went well. A small electrode that monitors the heart rhythm was operated in. It can regulate heart rhythm, and possibly send an electrical impulse, if it were necessary,” said Brann physician, Ove Austgulen, to NRK.no.

It means that he will survive and can live a normal life, but it is unlikely he can make it back to professional sports again.

“He can live a normal life, as Stale Solbakken does,” said Austgulen.

Solbakken collapsed in training with FC Copenhagen in 2001. Later, he coached the club, and is currently coach of Germany FC Cologne.

During the Brann’s game against Vålerenga on Sunday, a video was shown of a happy and bubbly Torp in his hospital bed, where over the big screen he sent a message to the Brann and the public in the stadium.
