Norwegian Crime Fiction Panel in NYC
Despite the fact that the Global Peace Index ranked Norway as the third most peaceful country in the world and the homicide rates in Norway are among the lowest on the planet, more people are murdered every year in the pages of Norwegian crime novels than are murdered in Norway itself.
A panel comprised of Norwegian crime authors Kjell Ola Dahl and Anne Holt, along with Norwegian Police Counsellor at the Norwegian Mission to the UN, Odd Malme Berner and moderator Sarah Weinman, will discuss the rise of Norwegian crime fiction.
Dahl has written eleven novels since 1993, mostly crime novels with a psychological interest. So far, two of his novels have been published in English. Both feature the Oslo detectives Frank Frølich and Inspector Gunnarstranda. These are translations of the fifth and third books in the series, respectively.
Holt is a bestselling Norwegian thriller writer with three million books sold worldwide-and a former minister of justice, lawyer, journalist, and TV news editor and anchor. In 1993 she made her debut as a novelist with the crime novel “Blind gudinne”, featuring the lesbian police officer Hanne Wilhelmsen. She is one of the most successful crime novelists in Norway. She has been published in 25 countries.
Weinman is a freelance writer based in New York. She writes “Dark Passages,” a monthly online mystery & suspense column for the Los Angeles Times, and “The Criminalist”, a monthly online column for the Barnes & Noble Review.
This free event is open to the public and will take place Oct. 17 at 7 pm at Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue at 38th St. in NYC.
