Norway urges north-south cooperation in tapping Sudan oil
Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre urged northern and southern Sudanese leaders on Tuesday to work together to maximize the country’s oil wealth, warning that otherwise both sides would lose out.
Much of Sudan’s estimated reserves of six billion barrels lie on the border between north and south and how to share the revenues has been a major source of tension in the run-up to a promised referendum on southern independence due in January.
“My message has been that from an energy perspective there is the potential for both sides to enjoy a considerable downside if this is managed unwisely,” Støre told reporters in the capital Khartoum.
