Norway Under-21 coach Øystein Gåre, his country’s coach of the year in 2003 while in charge of FK Bodø/Glimt, has died aged 56 after a short illness.

Øystein Gåre, the coach of Norway’s Under-21 team, has died aged 56 after a short illness.

“This is a great loss to football. Gåre was a highly-respected coach at both club and international level. First and foremost, our thoughts go to his closest family,” said Paul Glomsaker, general secretary of the Football Association of Norway (NFF).

Gåre spent most of his coaching career at FK Bodø/Glimt. He was named his country’s coach of the year in 2003 after the club finished runners-up in both the league and Norwegian Cup.

Appointed Under-21 coach on 1 January 2007, he had been on sick leave following the diagnosis of his illness with Tor Ole Skullerud taking temporary charge for the team’s final three matches in qualifying for the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
