The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry has given 1 million NOK to the establishment of an innovative study in nature guiding in Arctic areas by the University Centre on Svalbard, reports The Barents Observer.

“This is an initiative to strengthen tourism in the High North. The guides will make the experience better for the tourists and enhance the environmental side of the tourist industry on Svalbard,” says Minister for Trade and Industry Sylvia Brustad on the Ministry’s web site.

Attention towards Svalbard as a goal for tourists has increased in the last years. The archipelago has vast areas of untouched nature, and the harsh climate and vulnerable nature set high requirements for tourist guide’s competence in safety and environment protection.
