Norway joins ReCAAP

Norway has become the fifteenth member of the Asian anti-piracy watchdog, ReCAAP.

“Though the Kingdom of Norway is geographically located outside Asia, the state has intrinsic interests in combating piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia as a significant number of Norwegian ships ply in Asia,” reads a statement from ReCAAP.

Gaute Sivertsen has been appointed as the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) Governor for Norway. He is currently the Deputy Director General of Maritime Department in the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry. Mr. Sivertsen is responsible for maritime safety, security and IMO policy in the Ministry.

ReCAAP (the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia) was finalized in November 2004 and entered into force on September 4, 2006.

The aim of ReCAAP is to serve as a platform for information exchange, to conduct research and analysis of piracy and armed robbery and to help capacity building efforts. The fifteen Contracting Parties to ReCAAP are Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Norway, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam.
