On May 27 an agreement was signed confirming that Norway will provide a total of USD 260 000 to the Alliance of Small Island States’ (AOSIS) work on climate change negotiations for 2009 and 2010.
AOSIS is a coalition of small island and low-lying coastal countries that share similar development challenges and concerns about the environment, especially their vulnerability to the adverse effects of global climate change. It functions primarily as a forum for consultations and negotiating voice for small island developing States (SIDS) within the United Nations system. Grenada signed the agreement in its capacity as chair of AOSIS.
The support will enable AOSIS to establish a New York based secretariat whose main activity will be to coordinate the work of the Small Island States on climate issues towards and beyond the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009.
