Nortura divisions closing down
Norway’s leading supplier of meat and eggs, Nortura, has announced that it is closing down its slaughterhouses in Sortland, Haugesund and Ålesund, reports the Norway Post.
Nearly 500 employees will lose their jobs.
The closing in Ålesund does not come as a shock to the employees, reports Dagbladet. For as many as ten years Nortuna has talked about closing their location in the city.
“The cuts are necessary in order to rectify the serious economic situation the Group is in,” says Nortura board chairman Sveinung Svibestad.
Nortura is is a result of the merger between Gilde Norsk Kjøtt BA and Prior Norge BA, and has 6,500 employees in different industries in 37 municipalities in 15 counties all over Norway.
The group is organized as a cooperative owned by 28,100 Norwegian farmers.
