Norsk 101: Pepperkaker, duften av jul

Snart er julen her (Christmas will soon be here) og det betyr (and that means) at mange begynner å bake julekaker snart (that many will begin baking Christmas cookies soon).

Tynne, krydrede og sprø (Thin, spicy, and crisp), pepperkaker (gingerbread cookies) – bokstavelig talt (literally) pepper cakes – er en av de mest populære julekakene (are one of the most popular Christmas cookies). Ingenting er bedre (Nothing is better) enn lukten av (than the smell of) krydrede pepperkaker (spicy gingerbread) i hele huset (in the whole house).

Det er mange forskellige oppskrifter på pepperkaker (There are many different recipes for gingerbread cookies) og ingrediensene kan variere (and the ingredients can vary). Vanlige ingredienser er «lys sirup» (Common ingredients are light syrup) for milde pepperkaker (for mild gingerbread), eller mørk sirup (or dark syrup) for en kraftigere smak (for a stronger taste) og mørkere farge (and darker color). Vanlige krydder er (Common spices are) ingefær (ginger), kanel (cinnamon), nellik (cloves), kardemomme (cardamom) og til og med pepper (and even pepper). 

Pepperkakedeigen må ligge kaldt (The dough must chill) i kjøleskapet (in the refrigerator) en god stund (for a while), gjerne over natten (preferably overnight). Elt deigen (Knead the dough) på et lett melet bord (on a lightly floured board) og deretter kjevle deigen ut (and then roll the dough out) til den er ca 3 mm tykk (until it is about 1/8-inch thick). For å få sprø pepperkaker (To get crisp cookies), må du kjevle deigen (you have to roll the dough) så tynne som du klarer (as thin as you can).

Bruk pepperkakeformer (Use cookie cutters) til å stikke ut ulike figurer (to cut out different figures). Tradisjonelle former er (Traditional shapes are): gris (pig), hjerte (heart), juletre (Christmas tree), stjerne (star) og pepperkakemann (gingerbread man). 

Stek pepperkakene til de er gyllenbrune (Bake the gingerbread cookies until they are golden-brown). Når kakene er helt avkjølt (When the cookies are completely cooled), kan du pynte dem (you can decorate them) med melisglasur og godteri (with icing and candy). Oppbevar pepperkakene (Store the gingerbread cookies) i en tett kakeboks (in a tightly covered cookie tin).

Et lite råd (A little word of advice)! Vær forsiktig (Be careful) når du åpner ovnsdøren (when you open the oven door). En pepperkakegutt kan hoppe ut (A gingerbread boy might jump out)!

Løp, løp så fort du kan

For ingen kan fange 

en pepperkakemann!

(Run, run as fast as you can

For no one can catch 

a gingerbread man!)
