On Norway’s national day, the whole country becomes a sea of red, white, and blue.

Norges grunnlovsdag (Norway’s Constitution Day) feires på 17. mai hvert år (is celebrated on May 17th each year). Dagen er en offisiell flaggdag i Norge (The day is an official flag day in Norway). Alle barna synger norske sanger (All the children sing Norwegian songs), roper hurra (shout hooray) og vifter med det norske flagget (and wave the Norwegian flag).

Over hele Norge (All around Norway) vaier det norske flagget (the Norwegian flag waves) fra flaggstenger og bygninger (from flagpoles and buildings), festninger og skip (fortresses and ships). På Norges nasjonaldag (On Norway’s national day) blir hele landet (the whole country becomes) et hav av rødt, hvitt og blått (a sea of red, white, and blue).

Norge har gjennom historien hatt (Throughout history Norway has had) mange forskjellige flagg (many different flags). Den norske grunnloven av 1814 (The Norwegian Constitution of 1814) bestemte at Norge hadde rett til (determined that Norway had the right) å ha sitt eget flagg (to have its own flag).

Stortinget fikk inn mange forslag (Parliament received many proposals) til et norsk flagg (for a Norwegian flag) og det nåværende flagget (and the current flag) som vi kjenner i dag (that we know today) ble valgt i 1821 (was chosen in 1821). Flagget ble tegnet (The flag was designed) av stortingsmann (by member of parliament) Frederik Meltzer fra (from) Bergen.

Det norske flagget er et nordisk korsflagg (The Norwegian flag is a Nordic cross flag). Det har et mørkeblått kors (It has a dark blue cross) med hvite kanter (with white edges) på rød bunn (on a red background). Korset symboliserte opprinnelig kristendommen (The cross originally symbolized Christianity). Den vertikale stripen i korset (The vertical stripe in the cross) er forskjøvet mot flaggstangen (is shifted toward the flagpole). Meltzer mente at et rødt flagg med hvitt kors (Meltzer believed that a red flag with a white cross) markerte unionen med Danmark (marked the union with Denmark) fra (from) 1397 til (until) 1814, mens det blå korset symboliserte den nye unionen med Sverige (while the blue cross symbolized the new union with Sweden).

Under unionen med Sverige (During the union with Sweden) måtte norske skip bruke det svenske flagget i fjerne farvann (Norwegian ships had to use the Swedish flag in distant waters). I 1844 fikk begge land sine egne nasjonale flagg (In 1844, both countries received their own national flags) med et felles unionsmerke (with a common union mark) i svenske og norske farger i kantonen (in Swedish and Norwegian colors in the canton). Dette unionsmerket ble populært kalt «sildesalaten» (This union mark was popularly called “the herring salad”) og forble i flagget (and remained in the flag) til unionsoppløsningen i (until the dissolution of the union in) 1905.
