Bernt Balchen var en norsk-amerikansk flyger (was a Norwegian-American aviator) og en pioner innen polarflyging (and a pioneer in polar aviation). Tre Sons of Norway losjer er oppkalt etter ham (Three Sons of Norway lodges are named after him) i Anchorage, Alaska; Rowland, Pennsylvania; og Kristiansand, Norge (in Anchorage, Alaska; Rowland, Pennsylvania; and Kristiansand, Norway).

Balchen hadde et spennende liv (had an exciting life). Han var født 23. oktober 1899 nær (He was born on Oct. 23, 1899 near) Kristiansand. Han var en dyktig friluftsmann, skarpskytter og skiløper (He was a skilled outdoorsman, sharpshooter, and skier). Han var også mesterbokser (He was also a champion boxer) og trente for å bokse i OL i 1920 (and trained to box in the 1920 Olympics).

I 1918 vervet han seg til den franske Fremmedlegionen (In 1918, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion). Deretter meldte han seg som frivillig i den finske borgerkrigen (He then volunteered in the Finnish Civil War). Han ble såret i et kavaleriangrep (He was wounded in a cavalry charge) og døde nesten på slagmarken (and almost died on the battlefield). I 1921 tok han militært flysertifikat (In 1921, he obtained his military pilot’s license) ved Marinens flygeskole i Horten (at the Naval Flight School in Horten).

Som pilot, mekaniker og navigatør hjalp Balchen (As a pilot, mechanic, and navigator, Balchen helped) Roald Amundsen, Richard Byrd og Amelia Earhart på deres ekspedisjoner i Arktis, Antarktis og over Atlanterhavet (on their expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctic, and across the Atlantic Ocean). I 1929 ble han den første som fløy over Sydpolen (In 1929, he became the first to fly over the South Pole).

Under andre verdenskrig (During World War II) var Balchen ansvarlig for opprettelsen av treningsleiren (Balchen was responsible for setting up the training camp) «Little Norway» i nærheten av (near) Toronto.

Som oberst i det amerikanske flyvåpen (As a colonel in the U.S. Air Force), etablerte han en militær flybase på Grønland (he established a military airbase in Greenland) som ble brukt til å ferge fly til Europa (which was used to ferry aircraft to Europe).

Balchen ledet lufttransportoperasjoner (Balchen led airlift operations) som evakuerte mennesker (that evacuated people) og transporterte forsyninger og utstyr (and transported supplies and equipment) til okkuperte Norge (to occupied Norway).

Etter krigen ble han sjef for (After the war he became commander of the) 10th Rescue Squadron i Alaska. I 1949 fløy han fra Alaska over Nordpolen til Norge (In 1949, he flew from Alaska over the North Pole to Norway) og ble den første i verden (and became the first person in the world) til å fly over begge polene (to fly over both poles).
