The Vikings are coming!
PCNSA’s 106th Sangerfest converges on Salem
Chorus members of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association will be coming to Salem, Oregon, from June 18 through June 20, to participate in the 106th annual Sangerfest sponsored by the PCNSA. Singers will come from as far north as Bellingham, Mt. Vernon, Everett, Seattle, Tacoma, and Poulsbo in Washington, and from as far south as Eugene, Oregon, and San Diego, California.
These disparate groups will form a chorus of one hundred men and perform the Sangerfest Grand Concert on Friday, June 19. This event will be held in the West Salem High School auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The school is located at 1776 Titan Drive NW, (Orchard Heights and Doaks Ferry). Tickets are $10 and are available from members of the Salem Thorsmen Chorus, or at MUSIC, MUSIC, 2790 Market Street NE in Salem. They can be reached at (503) 371-9800. Tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the performance.
The Grand Concert, under the direction of Peter Butler of the Salem Thorsmen and Paul May of the San Diego Mannskor, will include many traditional Scandinavian songs as well as some in English. Dr. Alf Lunder Knudsen, PCNSA Director Emeritus, will also be conducting. Among the soloists will be Lyle Johnson of Vancouver, Washington, and Mark Steckmann of Salem, both members of the Thorsmen. Playing both solo and obligatto flute will be Karen Bourgeois of Lebanon, Oregon. Accompanists will be Dr. Jeff Highland of Camano Island, Washington, and Lagea Preuit of Salem, Oregon.
Our special guest artist this year is Miss Alicia Baker of Portland, Oregon, a world-class accordionist and singer. Baker is in high demand as a performer and clinician and recently graduated from Oregon State University where she was a vocal performance major and very active in the music department. We are very proud indeed to have her artistry as part of our concert! She will also accompany the chorus in Erik Bye’s “Skomværvalsen,” which should be a great crowd-pleaser!
