"Pikene på broen" by Edvard Munch
Her Majesty Queen Sonja travels to France
On Sunday, Her Majesty Queen Sonja was present at the premiere of the Munch exhibition L’oeil moderne” at the Pompidou Center in Paris. “The Modern Eye” presents a variety of formats through which Edvard Munch expressed himself.
Munch arrived in Paris in 1885 and developed his graphic expression here as a student of the French painter Leon Bonnat. In this exhibit, drawings, graphics, sculptures and film contribute to a very special presentation of Edvard Munch’s art and his modern look.
During a reception in the Norwegian Club in Paris in advance of the premiere, the Queen emphasized how this exhibition places Munch amongst the world’s contemporary avant-garde artists of the 20th century.
The exhibition displays a collection of work that has not been shown in France earlier. There are about 80 paintings, in addition to the drawings and prints, 50 photographs and a film showing how Munch’s interest in different levels of expression have inspired him. Innovations in contemporary society, such as the spread of photographs and film, illustrated press, and theater contributed to his influences as an artist.
The exhibition will be displayed in Pompidou Center from Sept. 21 to Jan.9, 2012.
