Jury President Åse Kleveland announced recently this year’s nominations for Amanda, the Norwegian film award, during a press conference in Oslo. As many as 24 Norwegian films have seen a theatrical release over the last year and are therefore eligible for the award.

Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s World War II epic, Max Manus, which has clocked in more than 1.1 million admissions domestically – the best result for a Norwegian feature since the mid-1970s – will be considered in 10 out of 19 categories for this year’s Amanda, Norway’s national film prize.

The Amanda Presentation Ceremony will be shown live on TV2 from Haugesund Concert Hall on Friday 21 August.  The 25th Amanda Award ceremony will end the film year of 2008/2009 and kicks off the 37th Norwegian International Film Festival, which is officially opened on Sunday 23 August.

This is the 25th time that the Amanda awards are presented and the anniversary aspect will be very noticeable during the ceremony. From a quiet beginning in 1985 the Amanda Committee – which consists of representatives from all industry organisations – will this year present as many as nineteen awards to the industry.

Four expert juries have been working on the nominations. The three juries that have considered feature films have been led by Jury President Åse Kleveland. “It has been exciting and instructive to lead the task of selecting this year’s Amanda nominations from such a large field, Åse Kleveland says. – The range in genres, artistic expressions and categories is wide. The same goes for economy and resources; from low budget films without government support to large productions with international financing and a production set-up seldom seen in Norway. We have many Amanda awards but there have been times when the juries have wished that we could establish even more,” the Jury President states.
