H.M. King Harald of Norway will officially open Aqua Nor 2009 in Trondheim on August 18, 2009. Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Mrs. Helga Pedersen, will also be in attendance together with dignitaries from foreign countries. This 16th international aquaculture exhibition has registered 266 exhibitors from 21 countries so far.

The Chairman of the Board of the Nor-Fishing Foundation, Mr. Peter Gullestad, expressed his joy and gratitude towards His Majesty for once again accepting to officiate at the opening of the exhibition. His Majesty has on several previous occasions opened the exhibition.

At the opening, Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Mrs. Helga Pedersen, will also be present, together with representatives of other countries’ fisheries authorities, including the Minister of Economy of Chile, Mr. Hugo Lavados. Official delegations are expected from South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, Chile and Scotland. Visitors from about 50 countries are expected to come to the exhibition this year.

In connection with Aqua Nor 2009, three conferences will be held in Trondheim. The Nor-Fishing Foundation will together with the International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA) host the 30th anniversary conference on August 20.  The European Aquaculture Society (EAS) will also hold its annual conference Aquaculture Europe from August 14 – 17. The International Aquaculture Biosecurity Conference will be held August 17 and 18.

In addition to these conferences, several smaller seminars and workshops have been announced. Among these, one of the most popular will certainly be the market seminar organized by the Norwegian Seafood Export Council and Nordea banking corporation, which will be held at the Rica Nidelven Hotel on the 19th of August.

“Against the backdrop of the international financial crisis, it seems that this year’s Aqua Nor will be a more important show than usual, and certainly a more important meeting place than normal for all parts of the industry, domestically and internationally. You will get the latest news about equipment and technology, and you will have a chance to discuss the development and challenges with colleagues and specialists in many fields,” says Mr. Odd Berg of the Nor-Fishing Foundation.
