The Norwegian Crown Prince visited the University of Life Sciences (UMB) in Ås on Sept. 18 to lecture and answer questions related to dignity and poverty.

Crown Prince Haakon has for years been concerned with development issues; an interest which has been expressed both through studies and official missions abroad.

In autumn 2003 the Crown Prince was appointed ambassador for the UNDP – with special focus on the follow-up of the UN Millennium Development Goals. As an ambassador he has made trips to Tanzania, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Guatemala and Burundi. The Crown Prince also has contributed to the Human Development Report.

Rector of UMB in Ås, Knut Hove, said he was grateful that the Crown Prince decided to visit the University and that he appreciated that he had chosen to lecture on issues related to poverty and dignity.

“This is a major issue that is also central in the university’s study-programs and research-activities. We therefore appreciate that the Crown Prince will to meet our students to talk about these issues,” Rector Hove said.

As UMB has a great number of overseas student the Crown Prince held his lecture, which was open to all, in English.

UMB had as many as 61 doctor’s degree graduates in 2008/2009. To mark the occasion, a large-scale doctor’s degree ceremony took place on Friday.
