The Romanian-born German author Herta Müller (56) has won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced today.

The Academy cited Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio as “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.”

According to the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Peter Englund, Müller’s “moral momentum” means she fits the criteria for the award “perfectly”, writes The Guardian.

The announcement of Müller’s win brings the total of women laureates to four this year, marking a historic first, writes Theglobeandmail.com.

“I am very surprised and still cannot believe it,” Müller said in a statement released by her publisher in Germany. “I can’t say anything more at the moment.”

Müller emigrated to Germany from Romania in 1987 because many of her works were censored in her native country, reports the New York Times. Her novels include “The Land of Green Plums” and “The Appointment.” She has written often of corruption and intolerance under a dictatorship.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is set to be announced tomorrow, Oct. 9, and the economics prize on Monday Oct 12.
