Free Scandinavian Summer Program is Looking for Norwegian Participants

Scandinavian Stories is a free, one-week afternoon summer camp open to 10-16 year olds with Scandinavian backgrounds, or other connections to Scandinavia. The program, taking place at the Houston Street Center on the Lower East Side from June 28 to July 2, is specifically looking for participants with a Norwegian connection.

In five creative workshops the participants learn how to effectively communicate a message and write and produce their own short film, a (Scandinavian) story. The program provides a creative and fun way for the participants to explore and present their experiences. In the process of writing, collecting material for, editing and finally voicing their own short film, they will not only gain a better understanding of narrative structure but also learn about issues related to cultural identity and globalization.

The hands-on workshops are led by the experienced youth media teacher Christoffer Næss, originally from Norway, along with two qualified assistants. Free / voluntary admission is made possible by a grant provided by The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

After the program the films will be screened to family and friends. The films will then serve as documents of what Scandinavian cultural identity can look like in a globalized world. They will be spread to a wider audience in the U.S. and Scandinavia through web and public screenings.
