The Norwegian American
Over the past two years, The Norwegian American has worked in partnership with Films of Norway (filmsofnorway.com), bringing you reviews of Norwegian films and TV series with English subtitles, in many cases, films you can’t see anywhere else. It’s a great way to increase your knowledge of the Norwegian language and learn more about Norway or simply enjoy good entertainment.
At the helm of Films of Norway is Geir Mæland. When I asked Geir why he founded Films of Norway in 2017, he explained:
“From friends, family, and others in the Norwegian-American environment, I was made aware that there were far too little Norwegian films available in the American market. At this time (2014), I also became aware that it was technically possible and within a reasonable budget to establish a digital streaming platform if you had the rights to films.
“I already had a network with Norwegian producers, who I knew would be interested in having their films distributed on my channel. I also knew enough about the technology and was reasonably sure that we would be able to handle the technical part in collaboration with the digital supplier. I also assumed that there would be a market for a Norwegian channel in the Norwegian-American environment in the United States, estimated to be around 4.5 million.”
Over the years, Geir has continued to build up a solid network in the international film industry, with a specialty in content sales and marketing strategies. He has built up partnerships with DR, Warner Bros., the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, Altibox, Splendid Medien, SF Anytime, and various international sales agents, distributors, and movie theaters.
And then, of course, Geir partners with The Norwegian American on film reviews and covering major film festivals, offering you a special insight into the films you’ll see. This is content you can find only in our newspaper.
Films of Norway offers a variety of films and TV series across genres: dramas, comedies, documentaries, action films and thrillers, children’s films, travel and cooking series, and special film content. Once you subscribe, you have unlimited access. You can sign up for a seven-day free trail, a monthly subscription for only $4.99 a month thereafter, and you can cancel your subscription at any time. An annual subscription plan is only $41.90.
As the website lingopie.com maintains, “Become fluent naturally by watching and listening to native speakers on TV.” And you can “sit back and binge-watch your way to fluency.”
But while Lingopie doesn’t offer Norwegian TV or film, we do through our collaboration with Films of Norway. We look forward to you joining us soon—happy streaming!
