LANESBORO, MINN. — Commonweal Theatre announces its 12th Annual Ibsen Festival April 17-19, 2009 in downtown Lanesboro. Named for the acclaimed “Father of Modern Drama”, the Festival is a celebration of Scandinavian theatre, visual art, music and dance, featuring over thirty different events and activities. This yearly gathering of artists and craftsmen was honored last fall by the Norwegian Government, who awarded the Commonweal Theatre one of only four inaugural International Ibsen Scholarships in recognition of ongoing commitment to producing the works of one of the world’s premiere playwrights.

For this year’s Festival, the Commonweal is delighted to welcome special guest speakers Joan Templeton (president of the Ibsen Society of America and author of Ibsen’s Women) and Ba Clemetsen (manager of the Ibsen Festival at the National Theatre of Norway). Additional events and presentations events will include a corset exhibit by artist Julie McLaughlin, Norwegian cultural presenters, concerts, classes and folk art displays. The highlight of the weekend will be the opening night of Ibsen’s classic drama, Hedda Gabler. First presented by the Commonweal in 1999, this 2009 production will feature Resident Artists Stef Dickens, Scott Dixon, and Jerome Yorke with Adrienne Sweeney, Ibsen Festival Coordinator, in the title role. The show will be directed by Hal Cropp, Commonweal’s Artistic Director and a 2009 Nominee for the International Ibsen Award.

During the Festival weekend, Hedda Gabler will perform on Friday & Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 1:30 PM, at The Commonweal Theatre, 208 Parkway Avenue North, Lanesboro. To reserve tickets, or for a complete list of Festival events, call 1-800-657-7025 or visit www.ibsenfest.org.
