Building the world's largest natural gas ferry

Fjord 1 has signed a contract with Fisker Strand BLRT A / S to build the world’s largest gas powered ferry.

The vessel will be delivered in November 2011 and should be inserted in the run from Arsvågen-Mortavika in Rogaland. Fjord1 is one of the largest transportation company, built up through a merger of the old “county boats” in More og Romsdal and Sogn og Fjordane.

Fiskerstrand BLRT is a company run by the shipyards Fiskerstrand in Ålesund and Western Shipyard in Klaipeda in Lithuania. The main objective of the establishment of the company in 2007 was to develop effective solutions for the construction of specialized vessels.

The Fjord1 contract with the company was in tough competition with several other European shipyards. The new gas powered ferry is a capacity for 242 cars and 22 trucks.

The connection between Arsvågen-Mortavika is one of the busiest in the country. The new ferry is environmentally friendly because NOx emissions are 90 percent lower than in normal powered ferries.

The ferry will accommodate 600 passengers. Fjord 1 next year will have twelve gas ferries operating along the Norwegian coast.
