Expedition America 2016: Draken Harald Hårfagre sails across the Atlantic

The world’s largest Viking ship built in modern times—Draken Harald Hårfagre—has begun her challenging journey across the Atlantic after departing Haugesund, Norway, last month. The Expedition America 2016 project is intended to promote exploration and bring the Viking discovery of the New World to life, more than a thousand years after Leif Eriksson’s transatlantic voyage.
A group of 32 sailors, or modern-day Vikings, are sailing the 35-meter-long ship across the North Atlantic. Draken Harald Hårfagre is not a replica of a Viking ship, but was instead inspired by a combination of the Gokstad ship, information from the sagas, and solid knowledge of traditional boatbuilding.
