REGISTRATION DEADLINE: FamilieKlubb: Try Rosemaling!

July 16

$20

A woman teaching a young girl rosemaling.Looking for a fun way to explore Norwegian culture with your family on your own schedule? FamilieKlubb is for you! Learn some Norwegian words and phrases and a new Scandinavian handcraft each month, and do it when it works for your family’s schedule!

Rosemaling (or rose painting) is a decorative painting technique characterized by scrolls, leaves, and flowers and has been traditionally applied to woodenware. Several distinctive styles developed throughout Norway. Vesterheim invites you to try your hand at this historical handcraft. You’ll learn how to try different brushstrokes, resulting in beautiful decorative painting. Beloved Vesterheim folk-art apprentice and elementary art educator Jill Willems will inspire you to be creative in unexpected ways through a warm video demonstration. The best thing about this class is that you can watch the video and open your kit materials to explore rosemaling whenever it is most convenient to you and your family members! Your registration provides you with a kit that includes everything you need to explore this handcraft as a family at home!

Supplies: The $20-per-family price covers the cost of a special folk-art class kit designed for two participants to explore rosemaling. Kit includes all folk-art materials needed, some images as inspiration from the Vesterheim Collection, and a treat.

Registration and Shipping Instructions: Kits are mailed out in time for you to begin your project on August 1. Only one adult should register for the intergenerational family duo. When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you’d like the kit shipped to, and the email address you’d like communications to be sent to. You will receive links to the video sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient’s mailing and email addresses or be prepared to forward all communications and/or kit supplies.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the contiguous United States, additional shipping charges may apply. Please contact aellingsen@vesterheim.org when you register for more information.

Special Instructions: This series has been designed to facilitate an intergenerational folk-art experience for an adult and child duo to do together. Because of the specialized folk-art materials in each kit, we recommend this activity for children over the age of eight with adult supervision.

Note: This program has been designed for families to experience on their own schedules. There is no live Zoom event and no scheduled class time—your family can participate anytime during the month when it works for your schedule! On the first of the month, you will receive an email with the links to the teaching video.

This is a youth and family-oriented program designed for adults and children ages 8-18. We offer online adult folk art classes on our website here.

Enrollment Deadline: July 17, 2021
