ONLINE: Vesterheim Bokprat (Book Group)
February 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
Dr. Maren Johnson, Luther College’s Associate Professor of Nordic Studies and Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies Director, facilitates a monthly bokprat for Vesterheim, discussing Scandinavian authors and Scandinavian life. Join Dr. Johnson in February to discuss Pakkis by Khalid Hussain. Drawing from his own personal experiences as a Pakistani immigrant to Norway in the 1970s, Hussain discusses the challenges of Sajjad, a teenager in Oslo, as he tries to negotiate his identities as Pakistani and as a new immigrant to Norway. This coming-of-age story illuminates the struggles and challenges of negotiating race and integration in Norway.
This month’s bokprat is offered in collaboration with Luther College’s Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, and the Civic Sustainability Initiative and is supported in part by the Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies.
Supplies: A computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
Special Instructions: Registered participants should secure their own copy of the featured book and have read it prior to the discussion. Copies of Pakkis are available from Nordic Press Studies—click here to order a copy. You will receive a link to the Zoom session by email sometime during the week prior to the group meeting.
