ONLINE: Celebrating Sámi National Day

February 6 @ 10:00 am - February 12 @ 5:00 pm

Sámi National Day celebrates Sámi culture and identity. Observed on February 6th, the day commemorates the first Sámi Congress of 1917, held in Trondheim, Norway. This historic gathering addressed common concerns across Sápmi, the Sámi homeland divided by the Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, and Russian nation-states.

The Sámi people mark National Day by wearing regional clothing (gákti), flying the Sámi flag, and speaking and singing in Sámi languages.

Norway House was proud to host a photography exhibit in 2020 called Sámi Dreams. Randall Hyman, the artist behind these stunning pieces, interviewed each subject to allow Sámi voices and perspectives to be heard. In honor of Sámi National Day, they are releasing this artwork again for one week, accessible to all for free from February 6 – 12.
