4th Annual Sámi Film Festival

30 October, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Join the National Nordic Museum for the fourth annual Sámi Film Fest. This year, we are partnering with Scandinavia House in New York and the Pacific Sámi Searvi in Seattle for this must-see hybrid event, which explores Sámi values, visions, and stories through film. There will be an opportunity to participate both in-person and virtually, from anywhere in the world. The program will include a variety of contemporary Sámi documentaries and short films, as well as panel discussions with the filmmakers.

They are thrilled to announce that the festival will include Eatnameamet – Our Silent Struggle (2021) by filmmaker Suvi West. The film portrays the indigenous Sámi people fighting for their existence, and it reveals multiple colonial acts imposed by the government. This film highlights broken rights and injustices inflicted upon the last indigenous people living in the EU.

Other films include Giitu giitu/Thank You Lord, a visual short film showing the Laestadian trance, by filmmaker Elle Sofe Sara.

The short film Suodji/Shelter adapts an old story from Utsjoki, Sápmi, with present day implications. During the 1918 Flu Pandemic in Utsjoki, the director’s relative Ovllá-Ivvár decided to fool Death and take his fate into his own hands. Today, we are facing similar threats. The protagonist of the film is walking in Ovllá-Ivvár´s footsteps. But at the end, who is really who?

The full program will be announced, and tickets released at the end of September on the National Nordic Museum’s website.
