DNV (Det Norske Veritas) was named best classification society globally by the maritime industry’s leading newspaper, Lloyd’s List, at their annual awards event held in London on September 8.

Regional manager Ioannis Kourmatzis received the award at the ceremony in London from Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s former media advisor. The awards attract a lot of industry attention, and their importance is reflected in the fact that Efthimios Mitropoulos, secretary-general of the IMO, was amongst the panel of judges.

Despite the economic challenges of the past year, the awards ceremony attracted more than 600 people and this demonstrates that the variety of disciplines that strengthen maritime transport shine brighter than ever, said Lloyd’s List editor, Tom Leander.

“Events of recent times have shown that there is no place to hide anywhere in the world,” said Mr Leander. “With the maritime industries experiencing the most challenging economic and operational times in decades, the performance and business competence of its leading players and internationally-renowned companies have come under the greatest scrutiny.”

Why DNV won

DNV received the award because it has focused, and excelled in three areas: quality, environment and technical competence. “The company has distinguished itself in addressing environmental issues in shipping and by spending considerable resources to develop state-of-the-art competence and services,” said Mr Leander.

According to DNV COO, Tor E. Svensen, “DNV is a trusted partner during any business cycle, and I am proud to say that we provide our customers with the best knowledge and expertise we have as a matter of course, each and every day. Our highly dedicated staff and our truly global network ensure we play a key role in building a safe and sustainable future for shipping, throughout the world.”

“I am proud of being the COO of “The best class society globally” awarded by the leading maritime newspaper Lloyds List,” says Tor E. Svensen, sharing the honour with his management team an all and everyone within DNV Maritime.
