Defence cooperation between South Korea and Norway
Norway and the Republic of South Korea have signed an agreement on development of defense materials, involving the Norwegian defense industry.
State Secretary Roger Ingebrigsen of the Defense Department signed the agreement on behalf of Norway, during a visit to Seoul in connection with the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the capital at the end of the Korean War.
During the Korean war Norway sent a military field hospital (NORMASH). In the midst of the war zone, NORMASH performed nearly 10,000 operations and treated 90,000 patients. Three Norwegian staff members lost their lives.
During the official marking of the anniversary, some 70 people representing the 16 countries which fought for South Korea under the U.N. banner during the 1950-53 Korean War visited the country at the invitation of the government.
Ten Norwegian Korea veterans were decorated by the South Korean authorities for their contribution.
