Daughters of Norway is a non-profit organization open to women of Norwegian or Scandinavian heritage. The organization is over 100 years old. At one point in time, lodges existed throughout the United States. Its aims include preserving the Norwegian heritage and maintaining knowledge of the history, culture and language of Norway among its members and communities. Currently there are 23 Lodges located throughout the Central and Western United States. For women interested in joining or forming a lodge please see the web site at www.daughtersofnorway.org for more information.
The lodge in Rainbow, Calif. will be named for Hulda Garborg who left a legacy in Norwegian history. She championed the Norwegian culture in the 1900’s during Norway’s time of forming their National identity. Known for establishing the “national bunad”, she authored the first bunad book in Norway. She also founded the Norwegian Fiddlers’ Society, which later became The Norwegian Theater. She published articles about traditional cooking, wrote plays, poetry and novels. She was appointed Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1932.
Women, who join the new lodge at the institution, or within thirty days thereafter, will be charter members. Potential members and others interested in attending this event should contact Ronna Clymens at rlclymens@yahoo.com or call her at (951) 849-1690 by August 19th.
After the Institution in August, The Hulda Garborg lodge will meet regularly at 11 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. The meeting location is at the Rainbow Valley Grange Hall located at 2160 Rainbow Valley Blvd. in Rainbow.
