Cross Country: Impressive Northug win
Norway’s Petter Northug who had struggled with illness earlier in the week, gave all on the final stretch to win the the 15km time trial cross-country skiing World Cup in Kuusamo Sunday, ahead of Russia’s Maxim Vylegzhanin.
Russia’s Alexander Legov came third on what is considered one of the most demanding courses on the World Cup circuit.
Northug, up to now considered a free style specialist, impressed everyone with his determined finish on the last two kilometres to win the classic style race.
On the women’s side, with Marit Bjørgen off sick, Norway’s Vibeke Skofterud captured third place in the 10km race, her first time on the World Cup podium in two years. Finland’s Aino-Kaisa Saarinen won, ahead of Russia’s Irina Khazova.
