Cross Country: Bjørgen and Hafsås won
Norway’s Marit Bjørgen and Ronny Hafsås both won gold at the season’s opening cross-country World Cup at Beitostølen, Norway on Saturday. Hafsås won the 15km race and Bjørgen the 10km.
Norway’s cross country Queen and Olympic medallist, Marit Bjørgen (29), admitted she had been very nervous ahead of the opener, but won women’s the 10km race, nearly 30 seconds ahead of Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla. Sweden’s Anna Håg placed third.
Ronny Hafsås (24), actually a biathloner, surprised everyone, including himself, by winning the men’s 15km, the first world cup win of his career, and could not keep back tears of joy. Italy’s Vincent Vittoz came second and Finland’s Matti Heikkinen third.
