Couple killed in avalanche near Balestrand
A couple was found dead Tuesday after their home was swept into the sea by a major avalanche near Balestrand in the county of Sogn og Fjordane late Monday evening. Ten people have been evacuated.
The couple’s home was swept off its foundations and completely crushed by the masses of snow, NRK reports. Though the dead have not yet been positively identified, the names of the two people missing since the avalanche struck are Eva Anna Christa Fleming, age 55, and Jon Lerheim, 60.
Due to the danger of further snow slides, rescue personnel are not able to move in by road.
The two were found after crews from the police and municipality, as well as a vessel from the Coast Guard, had carried out an extensive search below the avalanche site at Flesje, four kilometers west of Balestrand.
