Norsk 101: Brageprisen – The Brage Prize

Norge har en rik litterær tradisjon (Norway has a rich literary tradition) og er hjemsted for mange berømte forfattere (and is home to many famous authors). En av Norges viktigste litterære priser (One of Norway’s most important literary prizes) er Brageprisen (is the Brage Prize). Formålet med Brageprisen (The purpose of the Brage Prize) er å hedre norske forfattere (is to honor Norwegian authors) og skape interesse for norsk litteratur (and create interest in Norwegian literature).

Siden 1992 har Brageprisen vært delt ut årlig (Since 1992 the Brage Prize has been awarded annually) av stiftelsen Den norske bokprisen (by the Norwegian Book Prize Foundation). Prisen er oppkalt etter Brage (The prize is named after Bragi), den norrøne guden for diktning (the Norse god of poetry). 

Det deles ut priser i fire klasser (Prizes are awarded in four classes): Skjønnlitteratur (Fiction); Barne- og ungdomsbøker (Children’s and Young Adult Literature); Sakprosa (Nonfiction); og Åpen klasse (and Open Class) som varierer fra år til år (which varies from year to year). 

Åpen klasse blir (The Open Class will be) Sakprosa for barn og unge (Nonfiction for Children and Young People) de tre neste årene (for the next three years). Denne nye priskategorien (This new prize category) er et prøveprosjekt (is a test project) for å få flere og bedre sakprosabøker (to get more and better nonfiction books) og å fremme lesing (and to promote reading) blant barn og unge (among children and young people).

En jury som består av (A jury that consists of) kritikere (critics), forfattere (authors), akademikere (academics), bibliotekarer (librarians), bokhandlere (booksellers) og andre fagfolk (and other professionals) innenfor litteraturfeltet (in the field of literature) vurderer og velger ut (evaluates and selects) årets beste verk (the best works of the year). 

I tillegg tildeles Hedersprisen en person eller institusjon (In addition, the Honorary Award is given to a person or institution) som har bidratt til (that has contributed to) å heve kvaliteten på norsk skriftkultur (raising the quality of Norwegian written culture).

Vinnerne av årets Bragepris (The winners of this year’s Brage Prize) blir offentliggjort (will be announced) på en prisutdeling den 23. november (at an awards ceremony on Nov. 23).

Prisvinnerne får også 75.000 kroner hver (The prize winners also receive NOK 75,000 each) og en Bragestatuett (and a Brage statuette) laget av kunstneren Børre Larsen (made by the artist Børre Larsen).
