Booming population of wild reindeer on Svalbard

The speedy climate changes may be the reason for a doubling of wild reindeers on Svalbard in the past 30 years, reports The Barents Observer.

A comprehensive study of the impact of global warming in the Arctic published this week concludes that melting snow and ice create a complex picture of winners and losers in the northern flora and fauna, reports The Times.

The international study shows that mortality among reindeer on Svalbard has fallen sharply, mainly because of a richer and more sustained diet because of longer growing seasons for plants.
