Exports of Norwegian salmon in August totalled NOK 1.9 billion, reports Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

This is an increase of NOK 529 million or 39% compared to the same month last year. The volume of exports increased by no less than 14,600 tonnes (round weight) or 29%. The export price for fresh Norwegian salmon in August was NOK 30.29 per kilo. This is NOK 6.43 lower than the average price during the previous month.

“The main reason for the fall in the price of Norwegian salmon is the strong growth in volume,” explains Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. “Volume in the last week of August was a massive 41% up compared to the same week last year.” This year to date, exports of Norwegian salmon total NOK 14.7 billion. This is NOK 3.6 billion more than for the same period last year. The volume of Norwegian salmon exports has increased by about 52,000 tonnes or 12%.

USA on course to become important Norwegian salmon export market

In August, the volume of Norwegian salmon exports to the U.S. was 3,600 tonnes (round weight). This is an increase of 3,000 tonnes, up fivefold compared to the same month last year. This is primarily attributable to growth in exports of fresh Norwegian salmon fillets. In August, the U.S. was the 6th biggest market for Norwegian salmon.

Strong growth in exports to eastern Europe

Following relative market weakness earlier in the year, exports of Norwegian salmon to eastern Europe have powered ahead in August, growing by 2,000 tonnes or 42%. The entire increase is accounted for by exports to Russia. Exports to Ukraine in August were on a par with August last year.

Growth in exports to EU

Exports of Norwegian salmon to the EU in August showed growth in volume of 7,200 tonnes (round weight) or 18%. The strongest growth was in exports to Denmark, Poland and France. The EU’s share of Norwegian salmon exports in August this year was 71%, compared to 78% in August last year.

Norwegian Fjord Trout exports up in value, down in volume

Norwegian Fjord Trout also made a strong showing in August with exports for the month totalling NOK 153 million, an increase of 17%. However, the volume of exports showed a decline of 800 tonnes or 13%. This year to date, exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout total NOK 1.3 billion, an increase of NOK 204 million compared to the same period last year. The volume of exports for the year to date has fallen by 7,800 tonnes or 14%.
